Class Descriptions & Pricing
My classes are designed to teach basic color theory and the mechanics of color-mixing using a primary palette (Red, Blue and Yellow). We start by exploring how Ivory Black, Titanium White, Cadmium Red and Yellow Ochre can be mixed to create over 72 different colors. We learn how to choose a subject to paint that is appropriate for our skill level, a working method to mix the colors we will need, transfer our subject to the canvas, work from dark to light and from general shapes to specific detail.
We learn the importance of VALUE (dark & light), how to observe pattern and shape, how to disengage our judgment about the subject we are painting and all the fun stuff that happens when we engage our minds to SEE instead of THINK. Oil paint is a forgiving medium that is well-suited for beginning artists. The beginning series will prepare anyone to confidently take an art class anywhere else. Although Drawing is an important fundamental skill, I personally do not feel that drawing is a pre-requisite for learning to paint. Drawing in these classes is kept to the minimum needed to plan a painting.
BEGINNING SERIES:
Basic color theory, color-mixing, understanding the medium and materials, including awareness of safely limiting exposure to toxicity, painting terminology, the importance of value & composition, “Seeing vs Thinking”, a bit of art history.
Four 3-hour sessions, prepaid $260 (=$65 per class) All painting materials are provided. Just show up for class in clothes you don’t care so much about.
Textbooks for the class are “Daily Painting” by Carol Marine -AND- “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” by Betty Edwards. $40 for both. As a matter of convenience, they are available for purchase at Paint Space.
Class Fee + Books = $300 due at first class
Payments by Check or Zelle are preferred.
Prior completion of the Beginning series is a pre-requisite to taking Intermediate series.

Learn to draw and design characters with artist John Kurtz, a long time artist for Disney, Sesame Street, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Hannah Barbera, and many others.
In this course, students will be shown how well-known characters are constructed and drawn. Students will then learn how to create their own character and how to draw it in different positions, and with different expressions.
